Jalalpur AdvancementCommittee (JAC-UK) is non-profit, non-sectarian Charity Incorporated Organisation (CIO), registered with Charity Commission UK. With no political affiliation here in the UK or in Bangladesh, JAC-UK is committed to serve the population of Jalalpur Union, Dokkin Surma Upozila, in Sylhet District. It aims at creating and supporting socio-economic and educational endeavour for the disadvantaged and marginalised groups in Jalalpur, Sylhet with the help of voluntary financial contribution made by the members of JAC-UK or any other individuals or philanthropic organisations. Anyone who hails from Jalalpur, or matrimonially connected to a spouse who hails from Jalalpur or who studied in one of its educational institutions is eligible to join JAC-UK. JAC-UK formally came into being on 15th May 2022 by holding its first annual meeting in East London. However, its inception occurred much earlier when humanity was facing an existential challenge by the global outbreak of the Covid pandemic. Life came to standstill with the sudden shock but only for a short while. Adjusting themselves with the new reality, brave people around the world drew up new strategies to get life move forward. We in JAC-UK also rose to the challenges. Instead of going into a state of inertia, we soldiered on in laying the foundation of our dream to create a new charity organisation. Most of the founding members of JAC-UK were associated with another charity organisation in the UK serving for the people of Jalalpur. However, management discord over some moral and equality issues bifurcated us despite numerous attempts on our part to iron out the contention. We were determined not to let anymore haemorrhage of our energy and disruption of our charity work, so we parted our ways with them as amicably as possible. We immediately felt an urgent need to set up a charity organisation of our own to serve the people of Jalalpur. We started extensive networking and held numerous zoom meetings – some extending to the early hours of the night. We worked tirelessly within the perimeter of the government laid Covid restriction. With the concerted effort of all, we finally managed to draw up and agree on a constitution for JAC-UK and got it registered with Charity Commission UK on 4th August 2023. We also set up a dedicated bank account for the charity. Already, we managed to raise fund for two emergency occasions back in Jalalpur. The spontaneity with which our members contributed and the organisational efficiency by which we managed to distribute the money among needy people in Jalalpur, made us sanguine that we can raise to similar or more ardent challenges in the future. On the hind side, we feel proud that we continued to work for setting up this organisation at a time when public life came to an abrupt standstill all over the world. Here in JAC-UK, we all remain firmly committed to transparency and accountability in every step of our way. We welcome feedback and constructive criticism which we view as an opportunity for us to grow cumulatively with increasing efficiency.
